Sacred Names of Lord Vishnu
The most celebrated of all thousand-name hymns, spoken by Bhīṣma to Yudhiṣṭhira on the bed of arrows. Every name is given in Sanskrit (Devanāgarī), IAST transliteration and English meaning.
The Story of the Viṣṇu Sahasranāma
At the end of the Kurukṣetra war, lying on the bed of arrows, Bhīṣma answered Yudhiṣṭhira's question — “Who is the one refuge of all?” — with the thousand names of Viṣṇu, in the presence of Śrī Kṛṣṇa Himself. It is recorded in the Mahābhārata, Anuśāsana Parva, chapter 149.
1 · Bhīṣma on the Bed of Arrows
Yudhiṣṭhira asked six questions about dharma. Bhīṣma replied that the highest dharma is to praise the Lord — and gave this hymn, beginning viśvaṃ viṣṇur vaṣaṭkāraḥ.
2 · Śaṅkara's Bhāṣya
Ādi Śaṅkarācārya wrote his commentary on this hymn, drawing out the Vedāntic meaning of each name; the meanings on this page follow that tradition.
3 · The All-Pervading
Viṣṇu means the one who pervades — as Nārāyaṇa He rests on the causal waters, as Vāsudeva He dwells in every heart, as Hari He removes all suffering.
4 · The Fruit of the Names
The phalaśruti declares freedom from fear, disease and sorrow, prosperity, and the highest goal for one who recites these names daily.
