The Story of Mahādeva

This Sahasranāma is spoken in the Mahābhārata, Anuśāsana Parva, where the sage Upamanyu teaches Śrī Kṛṣṇa the thousand names of Śiva. Further recensions appear in the Liṅga Purāṇa, the Śiva Purāṇa and the Vāyu Purāṇa.

Chapter

1 · Upamanyu's Teaching

Kṛṣṇa, desiring a son, performed tapas on Mount Himavat. Upamanyu revealed to Him the glory of Śiva and imparted these thousand names, declaring them the essence of all Vedic praise.

Chapter

2 · The Auspicious One

Śiva is Śaṃkara, the giver of peace; Nīlakaṇṭha, who drank the hālāhala poison to save the worlds; and Mahādeva, in whom creation, preservation and dissolution rest.

Chapter

3 · Ardhanārīśvara and Yoga

As Ardhanārīśvara He is inseparable from Śakti; as Dakṣiṇāmūrti He is the silent guru of jñāna; as Naṭarāja His tāṇḍava is the rhythm of the cosmos.

Chapter

4 · The Fruit of the Names

The Mahābhārata declares that one who recites this hymn attains long life, purity, freedom from sin, and finally liberation at the feet of Mahādeva.
