The Story of Śarabheśvara

The Śarabha Upaniṣad (an Atharvaveda Upaniṣad), the Śarabha Tantra, the Liṅga Purāṇa and the Kālikā Purāṇa describe how Śiva assumed the Śarabha form to pacify the burning wrath of Lord Narasiṁha after the slaying of Hiraṇyakaśipu.

Chapter

1 · The Eight-Legged Form

Śarabha is described with eight legs, a lion's body, the face and wings of a bird, and immeasurable strength — a form beyond every category of creature, signifying the transcendence of Śiva.

Chapter

2 · Pratyaṅgirā and Śūlinī

His two wings are the goddesses Śūlinī-Durgā and Pratyaṅgirā, the fierce protectresses who turn back all hostile mantra and abhicāra directed at the devotee.

Chapter

3 · The Pacifying of Narasiṁha

The Śaiva Purāṇas relate that Śarabheśvara calmed Narasiṁha's ugra-bhāva; the Vaiṣṇava tradition holds Narasiṁha as supreme. This page presents the Śaiva Āgamic account of the form as its own scriptures give it.

Chapter

4 · The Fruit of the Names

These names are recited for protection from black magic, enemies, fear, disease and untimely death, and for the calming of all fierce influences.

Primary scriptural sources: Śarabha Upaniṣad (Atharvaveda) · Śarabha Tantra · Liṅga Purāṇa · Kālikā Purāṇa · Śaiva Āgama tradition.
