The Story of Lord Sadāśiva

The account of Sadāśiva — the eternal, auspicious, five-faced form of Lord Śiva — is preserved in the Liṅga Purāṇa (Chapter 98), the Śiva Purāṇa, the Kūrma Purāṇa and the Śaiva Āgamas. It is the sacred record of the Supreme as the source of all worlds, the teacher of all knowledge, and the refuge of every soul.

Chapter

1 · The Five Faces of Sadāśiva

Sadāśiva is worshipped as Pañcānana, the five-faced Lord. Each face has a name and function: Sadyojāta (creation, west), Vāmadeva (preservation, north), Aghora (dissolution, south), Tatpuruṣa (concealment, east), and Īśāna (grace, upward). Together they govern the five cosmic acts through which the universe arises, abides and returns to its source.

Chapter

2 · The Liṅga Purāṇa Revelation

In the Liṅga Purāṇa, the sages approach the divine teacher and ask how Śiva is to be praised. The reply is the thousand-name hymn that begins with “Bhavāya namaḥ” — homage to the Source of Becoming — and unfolds into a complete meditation on the nature of the Absolute.

Chapter

3 · Śiva as the Cosmic Fire

Sadāśiva is the fire of knowledge that burns away ignorance. He is Hara, the remover; Rudra, the fierce compassion that destroys evil; and Śiva, the auspicious peace that remains when all impurity is consumed. His wrath is never cruelty — it is the love that frees beings from bondage.

Chapter

4 · The Ten Arms and Symbols

In meditation Sadāśiva is seen with ten arms bearing the trident, drum, torch, lotus, conch, discus, bow, arrow, noose and goad. These represent the powers by which He creates, protects, liberates and guides. The serpents, crescent moon, Ganges and tiger-skin are His ornaments of immortality and mastery over nature.

Chapter

5 · The Fruit of the Names

The scriptures declare that one who recites the Śiva Sahasranāma with devotion is freed from fear, disease, poverty and the bondage of karma. The names become a shield of divine remembrance, and the devotee attains the grace of Sadāśiva — the eternal auspiciousness that is one’s own true Self.

Chapter

6 · Sacred Seats of Śiva

The Lord is worshipped at the twelve Jyotirliṅgas across India — from Kāśī Viśvanātha to Rāmeśvara and Kēdārnāth — and in countless Śiva temples where the sacred liṅga stands as the formless-form of Sadāśiva, the pillar of light from which all forms emerge and into which they merge.

How to chant

Traditionally the Sahasranāma is recited after bath, seated facing east, before an image or liṅga of Sadāśiva. Light a lamp, offer bilva leaves, and begin with Oṃ and the dhyāna verse. Read each name slowly, letting the sound of the eternal Lord settle in the heart. The English meanings are aids; the fruit lies in the sound and in the surrender to the five-faced grace of Sadāśiva.
