Sacred Names of Lord Narasimha
The thousand-name garland of the man-lion Lord — protector of the devotee, destroyer of the tyrant, and the fierce compassion that answers from the pillar. Every name below is given in Sanskrit (Devanāgarī), IAST transliteration and English meaning.
The Story of Lord Narasimha
The account of Narasiṁha — the half-man, half-lion avatāra of Lord Viṣṇu — is told in the Bhāgavata Purāṇa (Canto 7), the Narasiṁha Purāṇa, the Harivaṃśa and the Viṣṇu Purāṇa. It is the sacred record of how the Lord protects a surrendered devotee and destroys the demon who thought himself immortal.
1 · Hiraṇyakaśipu’s Boon
The mighty asura Hiraṇyakaśipu performed severe austerities and won a boon from Brahmā: he could not be killed by man or beast, by day or night, inside or outside, on earth or in sky, by any weapon. Drunk with pride, he declared himself god and demanded that all beings worship him alone.
2 · Prahlāda’s Faith
His own son Prahlāda, a five-year-old boy, was an unshakeable devotee of Viṣṇu. Despite threats, torture and schooling in atheism, Prahlāda never wavered. When Hiraṇyakaśipu roared, “Where is your Viṣṇu?”, the child calmly replied, “He is present everywhere — even in this pillar.”
3 · The Pillar of Fire
Enraged, Hiraṇyakaśipu struck the palace pillar. It burst asunder with a sound that shook the worlds, and from it emerged a form never seen before: a being neither man nor beast, with a lion’s head and human torso, claws like thunderbolts and eyes like fire. This was Narasiṁha, the man-lion Lord.
4 · The Twilight Victory
The Lord seized Hiraṇyakaśipu, placed him on his own thighs at the threshold of the palace (neither inside nor outside), and tore the demon apart with his claws at twilight (neither day nor night). The boon was honoured to the letter; dharma was restored by a love that can be fierce.
5 · Ugra & Lakṣmī Narasiṁha
After the slaying, the Lord’s fury blazed so intensely that even the gods could not approach. Prahlāda offered hymns of praise, and finally Lakṣmī came and rested upon his lap, calming the fierce form into Lakṣmī-Narasiṁha — the protector whose wrath is only ever love in disguise.
6 · Sacred Seats of the Lord
The Lord is worshipped at many holy places: Ahobilam in Andhra Pradesh, where He is said to have appeared from the pillar; Simhachalam, where He is covered with sandalwood paste to cool His rage; Śrīraṅgam as Ahzagiya Maṇavāḷan; and countless village shrines as the guardian of devotees.
Primary scriptural sources: Bhāgavata Purāṇa (Canto 7, Prahlāda-caritra) · Narasiṁha Purāṇa · Harivaṃśa · Viṣṇu Purāṇa. The Lakṣmī Narasiṁha Sahasranāmāvaliḥ is preserved in the stotra collections of the Vaiṣṇava tradition, especially the Stotra Ratnākara and the Narasiṁhakośa.

How to chant
Traditionally the Sahasranāma is recited after bath, seated facing east, before an image of Lakṣmī Narasiṁha. Light a lamp, offer a flower, and begin with Oṃ and the dhyāna verse. Read each name slowly, letting the sound of the man-lion Lord settle in the heart. The English meanings are aids; the fruit lies in the sound and in the surrender to the fierce compassion of the Protector.
Jaya Lakṣmī Narasiṁha! Jaya Prahlāda-varada!
