The Story of Mahā-Viṣṇu

The Brahma Saṃhitā, the Sātvata and Pāñcarātra Āgamas and the Padma Purāṇa describe Mahā-Viṣṇu — the first puruṣa-avatāra of Śrī Kṛṣṇa, lying upon the Causal Ocean, from whose every pore a universe is born.

Chapter

1 · The Causal Ocean

Kāraṇodakaśāyī Viṣṇu reclines on the Kāraṇa Ocean; as He exhales, innumerable brahmāṇḍas issue from His pores, and as He inhales they return — one breath being the lifetime of Brahmā.

Chapter

2 · The Three Puruṣas

From Mahā-Viṣṇu comes Garbhodakaśāyī Viṣṇu within each universe, and from Him Kṣīrodakaśāyī Viṣṇu, the Paramātmā in every heart — the puruṣa-avatāras of the Pāñcarātra.

Chapter

3 · Kṛṣṇa as the Source

The Brahma Saṃhitā (5.48) states that Mahā-Viṣṇu is a portion of a plenary portion of Govinda — Kṛṣṇa remains the original Person, ādi-puruṣa.

Chapter

4 · The Fruit of the Names

Meditation on these names grants realisation of the vastness of the Lord, freedom from material identification, and entry into the eternal service of the Supreme.
