Sacred Names of Lord Maha Kaal Bhairava
The thousand-name garland of Mahākāla — the Great Time who devours time itself, Svacchanda Bhairava of the Kaula-Trika Āgamas, Lord of Ujjayinī and consort of Mahākālī. Each name in Devanāgarī, IAST and English meaning.
The Story of Lord Mahākāla Bhairava
Mahākāla is Śiva as Time beyond time. The Skanda Purāṇa (Avantī Khaṇḍa) records his manifestation at Ujjayinī, the Mahākāla Saṁhitā preserves his thousand names, and the Svacchanda Bhairava Tantra unfolds his five-faced, eighteen-armed cosmic form.
1 · The Manifestation at Ujjayinī
When the asura Dūṣaṇa tormented the devotee-child Śrīkara and the brāhmaṇas of Avantī, the earth split open and Śiva rose as Mahākāla, reducing the demon to ash with a single sound. At the prayer of the citizens he remained there forever as the Mahākāleśvara Jyotirliṅga — the only south-facing (dakṣiṇāmūrti) Jyotirliṅga.
2 · Mahākāla and Kāla Bhairava
Kāla Bhairava is Time as the guardian who judges; Mahākāla is Time as the Absolute that swallows even dissolution. The Āgamas call him kālasya api kālaḥ — the Time of Time. All the Bhairavas, and the eight direction-guardians among them, are rays of this one supreme Bhairava.
3 · With Mahākālī, His Own Śakti
Mahākāla is never worshipped apart from Mahākālī. She is his kriyā-śakti, the movement of his stillness; he is the ground of her dance. In the Kaula tradition the pair are the single non-dual Reality seen as consciousness and its power.
4 · Svacchanda Bhairava
The Svacchanda Tantra describes him with five faces — Sadyojāta, Vāmadeva, Aghora, Tatpuruṣa, Īśāna — and eighteen arms, snow-white in his grace-form, blue-black in his dissolving form. Svacchanda means "utterly free": he acts by his own will alone, bound by no karma.
5 · Bhasma Āratī and the Cremation Ground
At Ujjain he alone receives the bhasma āratī at brāhma-muhūrta, worshipped with ash — the final substance to which all forms return. His seat is the śmaśāna, not from morbidity but because there the illusion of permanence has already burned away.
6 · The Fruit of the Names
The Mahākāla Saṁhitā declares that his names conquer akāla-mṛtyu (untimely death), grant the Mahāmṛtyuñjaya protection, dissolve grave karma, and finally give mokṣa — for one who has taken refuge in Time itself has nothing left to fear from it.

Mahākāla is invoked at brāhma-muhūrta or in the night, on Kālāṣṭamī, Mahāśivarātri and during Mahāmṛtyuñjaya observances. Offer bhasma (sacred ash), bilva leaves and a ghee or sesame-oil lamp before a liṅga. Chant unhurriedly, resting the mind in the sound rather than the meaning.
Oṃ Mahākālāya Namaḥ · Oṃ Tryambakaṁ Yajāmahe Sugandhiṁ Puṣṭivardhanam
