Sacred Names of Lord Kaal Bhairava
The thousand-name garland of the fierce-auspicious Rudra who is Time itself — Kṣetrapāla and Kotwāl of Kāśī, remover of fear, sin and untimely death. Each name is given in Devanāgarī, IAST transliteration and English meaning.
The Story of Lord Kāla Bhairava
The account of Kāla Bhairava is preserved in the Śiva Purāṇa (Śatarudra Saṃhitā), the Kāśī Khaṇḍa of the Skanda Purāṇa, and the tantric Rudrayāmala. He is not a lesser deity but Śiva Himself in the form of Time — terrible to sin, gentle to the devotee.
1 · The Birth from Śiva's Wrath
When Brahmā, in the pride of creatorship, spoke arrogantly of himself as the Supreme, a blazing form emerged from Śiva's brow — Bhairava, "the terrible one who fills with awe". With the nail of his left thumb he severed Brahmā's fifth head, ending the pride that had spoken untruth.
2 · The Brahmakapāla and Kāśī
The severed skull clung to his hand as brahmahatyā. Wandering the worlds as Bhikṣāṭana, he came at last to Kāśī, where the skull fell away at Kapālamocana tīrtha. Śiva then appointed him eternal Kotwāl (chief guardian) of Kāśī — no soul enters or leaves the city without his sanction.
3 · Kṣetrapāla — Guardian of Sacred Ground
Every temple, every śakti-pīṭha and every consecrated field has its Bhairava standing at the boundary as Kṣetrapāla. He is worshipped before the deity within, for he grants the permission by which worship bears fruit, and turns away every hostile force.
4 · The Aṣṭa Bhairavas
From Kāla Bhairava arise the eight guardians of the directions — Asitāṅga, Ruru, Caṇḍa, Krodha, Unmatta, Kapāla, Bhīṣaṇa and Saṁhāra — each with his śakti, forming the protective maṇḍala of the cosmos.
5 · His Form and His Dog
Digambara, dark as the storm-cloud, with matted jaṭā and serpents, he bears the triśūla, ḍamaru, pāśa and kapāla. His vāhana is the śvāna, the dog — the being who is loyal without condition, the sign that Bhairava accepts even the outcast.
6 · The Fruit of the Names
Recitation of the Bhairava Sahasranāma is prescribed for freedom from fear, debts, enemies, litigation, black magic and untimely death, and above all for kāla-bhaya-nāśa — the ending of the fear of Time itself, which is liberation.
Primary scriptural sources: Rudrayāmala Tantra (Kālabhairava Sahasranāma Stotram) · Skanda Purāṇa, Kāśī Khaṇḍa · Śiva Purāṇa, Śatarudra Saṃhitā. Meanings follow the traditional Śaiva-tantric commentaries.

How to chant
Bhairava is traditionally worshipped at dusk or in the night, especially on Aṣṭamī tithi, Kālāṣṭamī and Bhairava Aṣṭamī. Light a lamp with sesame oil, offer red flowers, and — where custom allows — feed a dog before beginning. Recite each name slowly with a settled heart; his grace answers sincerity, not perfection.
Oṃ Kālabhairavāya Namaḥ · Oṃ Hrīṁ Baṭukāya Āpaduddhāraṇāya Kuru Kuru Baṭukāya Hrīṁ
