Sacred Names of Lord Jagannath
The Śrī Jagannātha Sahasranāma Stotram from the Brahma Purāṇa — spoken by Bhīṣma to Yudhiṣṭhira on the sacred names of the Lord of Nīlācala, worshipped at Puruṣottama Kṣetra (Puri) as the wooden mūrti of the dāru‑brahma, the Lord of the Universe. Every name below is in Sanskrit (Devanāgarī), IAST transliteration and a concise English meaning.
The History of Lord Jagannath & the Puri Temple
The story of Lord Jagannath is recorded principally in the Skanda Purāṇa, Utkala Khaṇḍa (the Puruṣottama Kṣetra Māhātmya), with parallel accounts in the Niladri Mahodaya, the Brahma Purāṇa, and the Padma Purāṇa. The narrative is not myth in the modern sense — it is the traditional Vaiṣṇava record of how the Supreme Lord chose to appear on earth as dāru‑brahma, the Brahman embodied in sacred wood, so that any being — of any caste, tribe, gender or nation — could look upon Him with their own eyes and be liberated.
1 · King Indradyumna & Nīla Mādhava
The pious King Indradyumna of Avantī (Malwā), a great devotee of Viṣṇu, hears of a supremely secret form of the Lord worshipped in the forests of Utkala (Odisha) — Nīla Mādhava, a sapphire‑blue Viṣṇu hidden in a cave on Nīlācala hill. He sends emissaries in every direction. Only the Brahmin Vidyāpati succeeds — he befriends the Śabara tribal chief Viśvāvasu, the sole hereditary worshipper of Nīla Mādhava, and is at last led blindfolded to the shrine. But when King Indradyumna arrives, the deity has vanished, buried under drifting sand — a sign that the Lord will now appear anew, in a form for the whole world.
2 · The Dāru‑Brahma on the Shore
In a dream Lord Viṣṇu instructs Indradyumna: a great fragrant dāru (log of divine wood), marked with the conch, discus, mace and lotus, will drift ashore at Bāṅkī Muhāna. From this single log, the images of the Lord are to be carved. The log arrives exactly as foretold. No artisan can cut it. An old carpenter appears — Viśvakarmā Himself, in disguise — and agrees to carve the mūrtis on one condition: the door of the sanctum must remain shut for twenty‑one days, and no one may look inside.
3 · The Unfinished Form
Queen Guṇḍicā, hearing no sound of tools for many days, fears the old artisan has died. The door is opened before the appointed time. Viśvakarmā departs at once — and the three deities remain forever as they were then, with round luminous eyes, stump‑arms and no hands or feet. This is the intentional abhaya‑rūpa: the formless Brahman condescending to a form so minimal, so childlike, that no philosophy and no caste and no learning is required to love Him. The unfinished form is the message.
4 · The Trinity of Nīlācala
On the Ratna Vedī sit three: Śrī Jagannātha (black‑hued, Kṛṣṇa Himself, the ātman), Balabhadra (white‑hued, Balarāma, the primal Ādi‑Śeṣa and consciousness), and Devī Subhadrā (golden‑yellow, the śakti, seated between the two brothers). Beside them stands Sudarśana as a pillar — the discus of Viṣṇu, guardian of dharma. Together they are the complete Brahman: sat, cit, ānanda.
5 · The Śrī Mandira of Puri
The present stone temple — the Śrī Mandira — was built in the 12th century CE by Anantavarman Chodagaṅga Deva of the Eastern Gaṅga dynasty, and completed by Anaṅgabhīma Deva III in the 13th century. Its towering śikhara rises 214 feet above Nīlācala hill. The temple survived repeated invasions; the deities were hidden many times and always returned. Puri is one of the four Char Dhām established in the four directions of India — Badrinath (north), Dwarka (west), Rameswaram (south), and Puri (east) — and the seat of Govardhana Maṭha of Ādi Śaṅkarācārya.
6 · Ratha Yātrā & Nabakalebara
Once every year, in the bright fortnight of Āṣāḍha, the Lord Himself steps out of His temple. On three colossal wooden chariots — Nandighoṣa, Tāladhvaja, and Darpadalana — Jagannātha, Balabhadra and Subhadrā ride to the Guṇḍicā Temple to visit their birthplace. This is the Ratha Yātrā, and to touch the rope of that chariot is said to grant the fruit of a thousand horse‑sacrifices. In rare years when the month of Āṣāḍha doubles (roughly every 12–19 years), the mūrtis themselves are renewed in the secret rite of Nabakalebara — a fresh dāru is identified by ancient signs, the Brahma‑padārtha (the eternal soul of the Lord) is transferred at midnight by blindfolded priests, and the Lord walks again in a new body. The wood changes; the Lord is unchanging.

Historical dating follows the epigraphic record of the Eastern Gaṅga dynasty inscriptions preserved at the Śrī Mandira and studied in modern Odishan temple history.

How to chant
Traditionally the Sahasranāma is recited after bath, seated facing east, before an image of Śrī Jagannātha with Balabhadra and Subhadrā. Light a ghee lamp, offer a tulasī leaf, and begin with Oṃ and the dhyāna verse — nīlādrau śaṅkha‑madhye śata‑dala‑kamale… — then read the names slowly, letting the sound of each nāma settle in the heart. The English meanings are aids to devotion; the fruit lies in the pure sound and in surrender to the Lord of the Universe.
Jaya Jagannātha! Jaya Jagannātha! Jaya Jagannātha!
