The Story of Śrī Hanumān

The Hanumat Sahasranāma is preserved in the Ānanda Rāmāyaṇa (Sāra Kāṇḍa), and Hanumān's deeds are told in the Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa, the Skanda Purāṇa and the Śiva Purāṇa, which calls him an aṃśa of Rudra born to Añjanā by the grace of Vāyu.

Chapter

1 · Birth on Añjanādri

Born to Añjanā and Kesarī, carried by Vāyu, the child leapt at the rising sun mistaking it for a fruit. Struck by Indra's vajra, he was blessed by all the devas with invincibility — the Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa, Kiṣkindhā and Sundara Kāṇḍa, record these boons.

Chapter

2 · The Sundara Kāṇḍa

Crossing the ocean to Laṅkā, he found Sītā in the Aśoka grove, gave her Rāma's ring and burnt the golden city. This one chapter is chanted for the removal of every obstacle.

Chapter

3 · Rudra-avatāra

The Śiva Purāṇa declares Hanumān to be Śiva Himself descended to serve Rāma, uniting the highest jñāna with the deepest dāsya-bhakti.

Chapter

4 · The Fruit of the Names

The scriptures promise fearlessness, health, strength, victory over enemies, and freedom from graha-doṣa and evil influence for those who recite these names with faith.
